Sunday Skin Care

Ok!  So now that you know the importance of exfoliating your skin a couple times a week (click back to a previous blog to learn the importance of exfoliation) to allow all of your products to work at their highest potential and give you the best possible results, you are now ready to think about your everyday skincare routine.  Today we will discuss the basic components to a skin care routine and how it changes in the morning vs the night time.  Notice I said basic.  There are many more items you can add to the routine depending on your skin type, temporary skin troubles or the season of year.  Also, you could be a skin care junkie who likes to layer all of the products that will enhance your skin or you could be a minimalist in the skin care department and only want only the core basics.  I know it seems elementary, but if we are talking about going back to the basics, let's talk about the purpose of each general product.

Cleanser:  The term cleanser refers to a product that cleans or removes dirt or other substances on your skin.  Different cleansers have different benefits beyond cleaning your skin.

Toner:  In general, a toner takes off any extra make-up left on your skin after cleansing and helps to neutralize the PH balance in your skin.

Serum:  Serum is a skincare product you can apply to your skin after cleansing before moisturizing that delivers powerful ingredients directly into the skin.  For a daytime serum, you want to look for a lightweight, traceless finish without greasiness.  The night is the body's time to repair itself.  So for a nighttime serum, you want  the most reparative and hydrating properties.  There is nothing wrong with using the same serum for both day and night if you find one that you like the finish and the results.

Eye Cream:  The skin around your eye is delicate and needs a little TLC. Common issues eye creams address are fine lines and wrinkles. They help nourish the skin, keep it moisturized and prevent dullness.  They aid in puffiness and dark circles while brightening eyes.  Just like everything else, there are different kinds of eye creams for different issues that produce different results.

Moisturizer:  Moisturizers are essential to every skin are routine.  Just as our bodies require us to hydrate with water, so does our skin.  Moisturizers perk up your skin in the short term and can help decrease the appliance and rate at which fine lines and wrinkles emerge.

Night Creams:  Similar to daytime and nighttime serums, moisturizers and night creams can be one in the same.  A night cream can be heavier in consistencey  and include more powerful ingredients that that repair and restore your skin while you sleep and so to let your body do it's work, undisturbed.

Sunscreen:  Diligent use of sunscreen can slow or temporarily prevent the development of wrinkles, dark spots and sagging skin.  Some moisturizers or primers have sunscreen included in its ingredients.
